for moms everywhere. Yes, that includes ALL moms: step-moms, pet-moms, moms who’ve suffered loss, and all those who assume motherly roles in the lives of those who need them to do so… all “moms” are valid. If you function in any capacity as a mom, Happy Mother’s Day. You’re valued. You’re appreciated. You’re loved.
Oopsie! Note: I am pretty sure I hit publish on this last night, but this morning I found it hadn’t published. I’m sorry!! I hope everyone had a nice Mother’s Day!
Here at our house we celebrated the day with a classic breaded pork chop dinner complete with applesauce and cut green beans. That was followed by a deliciously moist piña colada cake (another house favorite). I did none of the prep, none of the cooking, and none of the clean up. 😊
That’s essentially our “tradition” for most special days: a favorite meal and some sort of tasty dessert, a few good laughs, and a whole lot of love.
Did You Know?
Mother’s Day was officially established as a national holiday occurring every second Sunday in May by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.
Its birth was in large part due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who, following the death of her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis in 1905, sought to establish Mother’s Day as “a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.” Anna’s original vision for Mother’s Day was “as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families.”
After it was officially adopted as a national holiday, she became “disgusted with how [it] had been commercialized.” She fought back against this by openly campaigning against it, exhausting her personal wealth filing “countless lawsuits”, and even lobbying the government to have the holiday removed from the calendar. — Mother’s Day 2023 – Date, Founding & Traditions
I’ve come to find that some of the best gifts in this life are the ones that can’t be bought at a store, and the ones I’ve received from motherhood are no exception. Happy Mother’s Day! 💜
